Renault Mégane adds turbo power
As promised towards the end of 2009, Renault has landed hatchback and Coupé Méganes sporting a potent new 1.4 turbo.
The new 1.4 TCe (or Turbo Control efficiency in Renault parlance) is meant to provide the best of both worlds – the power of a 1.8-litre, torque of a 2.0-litre with the efficiency of a 1.4...
Output for the new powerplant is 96 kW and 190 Nm, while fuel consumption on the combined cycle is about 6.5 l/100 km, Renault says. .
This engine uses an aluminium block and cylinder head and is fitted with a single scroll turbocharger. Renault claims the powerplant has been coaxed into delivering high torque figures at low revs for zero lag with a linear power delivery.
A six-speed manual gearbox drives the front wheels.
Using this, the 1.4 TCe accelerates to 100 km/h from a standing start in 9.5 seconds. The hatchback is good for top speed of 200 km/h, while the shapelier Coupé has a top end of 205 km/h.
As for the maintenance of this new engine, oil and oil filter changes are required at 30 000-km (or two-year) intervals and the air filter and spark plugs should be changed every 60 000 km. The accessory drive belt need only be changed at 150 000 km (or six years).
As with the rest of the Renault range, all Mégane models are covered by a five-year/150 000 km warranty and a five-year/100 000 km service plan.
