The new-generation Renault Mégane Shake it! is here. The 1.6 quad-valve five-door is aimed at "the young, dynamic and trendy" with the proposition that if you want it, you can have it.
The price is less than R200 000 so Renault SA is pushing its C-segment line-up after the last Mégane hatchback range. Xavier Gobille, managing director, said: "The current Mégane hatchback range has been very well received. With the introduction of the Shake it! we're broadening the Mégane's appeal to include the more price yet image-conscious end of the C-segment while delivering an unrivalled package as far as style and substance are concerned.”
Gobille believed the newcomer would appeal to a whole new group of Renault customers.
Design
Similiar to the Mégane Hatch, the Shake It! has the same five-door configuration. Indeed, there's little to distinguish the two, aside from the badging. The Shake It! also has 16" alloy rims, front fog lights and all the obligatory French-style credentials that underscore its appeal, Renault says.
Highlights include the hatchback’s contemporary cabin layout, with soft-touch finishes and charcoal upholstery.
As with the existing Mégane models, the Shake It! interior is spacious and comfortable; the boot opens to 405 dm3 boot capacity and has the versatility of 60/40 split folding rear seats.
Specification
The specification includes driver and passenger crash bags, curtain bags front and rear and Isofix child-seat mounts as well as anti-lock brake. A key card is needed for access, there's a single-CD, MP3-compatible radio with a 4x15W output as well as the practical satellite controls mounted on the steering column.
Bluetooth connectivity is provided, matched to the multifunctional 'Tunepoint' feature that allows the simple connection and control of a personal MP3 player via a USB adapter, auxiliary audio jack or iPod connection.
Aircon is standard, as well as a height-adjustable front seats.
Performance and efficiency
The car has the 1.6-litre quad-valve fuel-injected engine introduced on the current model range (83kW and 151Nm) with a six-speed manual gearbox and is capable of 0-100km/h in 10,5 sec. Top speed is 195km/h and average fuel consumption is listed as 6,9l/100km. CO2 emissions rating is 163g/km.
The recommended launch price is R199 900. A five-year/100 000km service plan is included along with a five-year or 150 000km warranty. It is also backed up by the pioneering "Satisfied or Reimbursed" campaign launched on August 1, 2010 which allows the customer to return their car after 30 days for a full refund - no questions asked.
