Pricing: Audi R8 V10, Q7 V12 TDI

2009-06-04 08:22

Audi South Africa has announced that the order books are now open for its two most desirable models, the R8 V10 and the Q7 V12 TDI.

The R8 V10’s 5.2-litre, ten-cylinder FSI engine churns out 386 kW and 530 Nm of torque, rockets from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds and a top speed of 316km/h. In the version with the sequentially shifting R tronic it reaches 200 km/h in another 8.1 seconds.

There are eight Audi R8 dealerships in South Africa who are currently taking orders for this new flagship model. Retail will commence in September and indicative pricing for this super car is R2 000 000.

From the Audi R8 V10 to the most powerful diesel-production SUV developed by Audi, the Q7 V12 TDI Quattro is also ready for local introduction.

Power comes from a 6.0-litre V12 generating 368 kW and 1 000 Nm of torque. Audi claims an average fuel consumption of 11.9 litres of fuel per 100km.

According to Audi a product highlight of the Q7 is its standard 20 inch ceramic brakes.

Indicative pricing for the Audi Q7 V12 TDI is R 1 500 000 and it will also reach showrooms in September.

I believe that this ia a lot of money for a car like this, and even if you can afford it, you still need to be rational. Let's compare the R 8 with something like a Lamborghini or a Porsche. If you are stuck in the middle of nowhere and your car needs to be repaired, you will be better off with the R 8, becaue there are only three Porsche dealerships and, as far as I know only one for Lamborghini in the whole of South Africa. However, Audi is very well represented countrywide. Therefore, the badge snobs must keep their ill-informed opinions to themselves; prestige will get you nowhere in the real world.

Seriously Guys... Don't get nasty with each other here! To each their own! You should all go check out YouTube & think oldschool for a second!! I personally prefer the option of spending probably somewhere between 100K & 200K on suping up an old VW Bug that will eat most of these cars up if done right... YES, you heard me right, a VW Beetle!!! Check it out for yourself on YouTube... VW Beetle has dropped R8, Ferrari, Porche, etc. The best thing & most priceless... Is the satisfaction of seeing the face of someone who has spent 1Bar+ for a "supercar", to get dropped robot to robot; or on the 1/4 mile by a VW Beetle!! Old School Rocks!!

WTF? 1.5m for a Q7 V12…..I would like to see a comparison test between the F430 Scuderia, Gallardo LP560, Porsche Turbo and GT2 and the Skyline GTR when it arrives. At Stuart, the R8 V10 is actually good value at R2m if you look at what you getting, maybe a Porsche 911 turbo might be better at the same price but a Lambo or Ferrari with similar performance expect to pay over R3m. Astons themselves are expensive, over R2m for a normal 4.2 V8 Vantage is expensive. AT Nikki, you will be amazed at how filthy rich the rich actually are and how many people can actually afford these. AT Andre, Stuart was referring to the R8 which retails at R2m which is the same price as a 911 Turbo. A lot of comments here from people who don’t know how much a Lambo actually cost. A NEW Lamo would set you back more than R3m. AT Chris, I don’t know hey, GT3 will def beat a R8 V8 but this V10 is something else. I think it will beat the GT3. All in all in the end I think the biggest threat to all cars mentioned above is the Skyline GTR, it will undercut them all interms of price but provide similar performance. Either way great Cars Audi

anon 5:30,i agree that most rich people do certainly care about pricing, but some do not think of these cars as `rubbish`(do you even have a passion for cars?)and feel that it`s worth it,not every rich person is trying to be as tight as they can possibly be.In this regard you seem to be contradicting yourself a bit,as you`re also commenting on behalf of the rich, and telling us how they spend thier money and what they think is `rubbish`.As for someone not venturing away from ferrari, porsche, etc.well,i have a client who has a ferrari and a ford gt in his garage,so he doesn`t seem to care about badges ,and i`m sure he isn`t the only one.

The problem with this Q7 is that it would look like the other Q7's bar the wheels etc. Why would you need 1000nm when 510nm is more than enough. Probably to show the neighbors that you just bought a 1,5mil rand microwave.

I saw a car show(local one) that test drove the R8 V8 when it was introducedhere. They attempted a top end run somewhere in the N.Cape. They could only do 278kph and not the 301kph claimed by Audi. Audi claim a lot from their cars that they just can't do. They had a 911 Carrera S drop this V8 version on Top Gear the other day. Around the track?1/4mile and top end. The 911 is R1.195mil. The V8 R8 is like R1.4mil. WTF ?

TO ANDRE: THE 911 TURBO IS LISTED AT 1,95MIL AT THE MOMENT, I NEVER SAID IT'S 1.5MIL. THE Q7 IS AT 1,5MIL, HERE RATHER BUY A ML63AMG FOR R1.139MIL. THIS IS IF YOU HAVE TO BUY SUCH AN SUV, WHICH I THINK IN ANYWAYS IS A WASTE OF MONEY. I WOULD EVEN BUY A GTR SKYLINE BEFORE THIS R8 V10. YOU CAN GET GREY IMPORT FOR R1.55MIL. IF/WHEN NISSAN BRING THEM OVER THEY WILL BE AROUND THE R1MIL MARK. NOW YOU ARE GOING TO TELL ME NISSAN ISN'T IN THE SAME LEAGUE AS AUDI. THINK ABOUT THIS. AUDI'S FIRST PRODUCTION SPORTS CAR IS THIS R8. NISSAN HAVE BEEN BUILDING SUPERCAR THRASHERS SINCE THE '80'S. AND I'M NOT A NISSAN FAN IF THAT'S WHAT YOU THOUGHT.

@Anonymous User 6/4/2009 5:30 PM haha stop pretending. Bottom line is like Johan says all the ones coming to RSA will be sold, if you have R 1.5 million to spend on a car you are rich. I am not rich myself, but i have a good mate current owner of an F430, who will vouch that this Audi would make an awesome buy due to the exclusivity of it. Lots of blokes are driving their lambo's and ferrari's around sandton. It's not uncommon to see one on a sunday afternoon anymore. Due to this fact alone it gives the audi a whole lot more appeal. So i think you are wrong my friend, you don't have to be a millionaire in order to understanding buying patterns. Go see how many of these are sold if you disagree.

I don't think Audi want these to be everywhere like your Golfs, 1&3 Series, A4, C class etc. You tell me how exclusive your Austin Martin or Ferrari will be if everybody could afford one. The R8 V8 is still so rare that its exclusivity is not in question. Guys stop saying bad things abt certain models or car makers just because you can't afford them. Buy what you can afford and let those that can afford these buy them. Whether you like it or not; Audi are making fantastic cars. Some of the comments here are pure jealousy and jealousy is dangerous. If you base your decision on buying a car from what you see on Youtube; well you are dumber than acceptable and you are a pollution to the gene pool.

Actually to you fools saying 'rich people don't give a damn about pricing', you are obviously not rich yourselves. "Rich people" care far more for pricing than ordinary folk who spend on credit. Perhaps because they have made the hard graft themselves & understand the true value of cash. What doff comments, rich people are rich because they know how to manage and spend their cash, and don't throw it away on rubbish. Some oddball playboys with daddy's money will buy these vehicles, but don't expect to see the real rich venture away from their porsche, ferrari, lambo and aston brands. Please don't comment on 'behalf of the rich' if you have no idea of their spending habits and are unlikely to ever be there yourselves.

Holy Smoke. I'm an avid Audi fan, but they (and VW) have seriously lost the plot, not just with these models but cheaper ones too. Well, so has BMW with the new Z4 pricing too I suppose. I don't get it. The world is in recession. These are exactly the types of cars that won't sell in any great quantity. Perhaps they know that, so in terms of income lost from a downturn in unit sales, they will make significant inroads in income by the exhorbitant pricing. One positive is that some rich idiots will buy this, and get seriouslly hammered by depreciation and then clever okes can pick up good deals second hand.

Eish, there are some real twits commenting here about things that is way out of their league. You won't see many of these on the road simply because there won't be that many coming to SA. And those that do come here, WILL be sold at these prices. They are obviously not meant for you. What's more a V10 Audi might cost 99000 pounds in the UK but we have a government that charges import duty for these cars, and of course the cars just don't happen to be here - they have to be transported here by any which way and all this costs money. It is not Audi's fault. Anyway why would they sell any of these cars for less, if they are going to sell ALL the ones that are allocated for these prices? This is not peculiar to Audi alone, the others are in the same boat. I'd like to see anybody here sell their car for R100000 if you have 20 people willing to pay R150000 for it. Come now guys get real for pete's sake! It's not what you think that matters - beauty is in the eye of the beholder (in other words, anybody that is going to buy one of these will be happy as a pig in sh*t irrespective of the fact that you think it is way overpriced). We might think it is overpriced, but hey, who gives a damn! Thats the way economics, the market, and self esteem work. And lastly if these cars were to be sold at cheaper prices, there will be a bigger demand. A demand for cars/units that will not be available. We are only getting an allocation and nothing more. These are exclusive cars, not volume bread and butter stuff. Price is relative!

I remember in the days when Audi use to make the Audi 80 and 500 e and se etc. They have come along way but the R8 just does not do it for me..Porsche or Ferrari anyday..better badge much better car. Hate to say it but even a Lambo has Audi written all over it. so the R8 is a fake Lambo- The Lambo is an Audi in disquise which equals that the R8 is a Lambo wanna be which at the end of the day it is the same damn car. Those Lambo badges sure are expensive.
    gpwengineer

I can afford to buy both these cars cash, but just cos you can don't mean its the right thing to do. Think both cars are overpriced. The V10 Audi is 99000 pounds in the UK, which equates to R 1,3 million - another example of Audi / VW ripping off the SA public, my GT3 was far better priced as they dont get the export subsidy like VW, so effectively there is no import duty!!

To all those below complaining about the pricing of these 2 models: Do you really think someone buying a car in this price bracket give a damn? It is about the car and not the price for these fortunate few. If you are a multi millionaire and liked Audi's all your life, you will pay anything for the exclusivity of these models. ANON 11h19 - Well said. I wanted to mention this, but assumed that all these VW/AUDI haters would have know it buy now. There are many magic cars that VW own, so you're right about the genes. There are the likes of Porsche(not own, but amalgamated), Lambo, Bugatti, and Bentley, so by looking at these cars, you know that your R8 is going to be absolutely awesome. I have been fortunate to drive an R8 Manual and it is SICK to say the least, and on-lookers can't keep their eyes off the car.

People once again bringing up the stupid argument of new prices vs second cars. Buy a 4 year old gallardo vs a new R8. This argument is so pointless, its boardering on stupid. If this argument holds water then everybody should not be buying any new cars then SA should just stop all new car sales and get second hand cars from other countries. Because where does this argument end. We might as well say its stupid to buy a R800k M3 when you can get a old M6 for 700k. Or why buy a GTI a 330K when you can get E46 M3 (albeit with 150K on the clock and service cost so high it will kill you as there is no motorplan). We can go on and on and on... about second car s vs new car prices.....and it will never end... However some people just love new cars and I think at 2bar for new car that is more driveable than supercar but with same performence is good value. Gallardo, Porsches, ferrari's attract alot of attention. Its loud, its in your face and everybody takes notice. In parking bays people will look at it, possibly scratch it and its not a car that can be taken any where. A r8 is slightly understated, still draws looks but not so much, and can be used to go out daily. This will appeal to alot of people.

It as an awsom looking car with Audi's buildt quality. For those of you that is not aware of the fact - Lamborghini is owned by V/W and so is Audi and Bugatti, so there should be nothing wrong with the genes of the R8. At least it looks like no other car on the road. There is twits that thinks it is a suped-up TT!

ANON 9h34 - Squashed TT? What you smoking? Have you driven a TT or R8? I doubt either b'coz if you have driven one of these you will understand what awesome cars they are. The R8 isn't a bitch to drive like other super cars, it drives as easily as an A4, has no rock hard clutch and goes really well too with one of the most awesome sounding motors you'll ever hear. And to everyone moaning about the price - there's a waiting list already, so there are MANY people that want and can afford these cars. Investment's '05 Gallardos are going for 2 BAR, that's a 4 year old car. Some people want a NEW car for that price with similar performance. BTW, I would also rather have a 997 Turbo, but fact remains that people WILL buy these cars regardless of the opinions of us Wheels 24 bloggers.

To Anon 9:56. The most expensive Cayenne is R1.695mil it is a 4.8 turbo, 404kW & 750Nm and it's a Porsche, not an Audi/VW. The GL 65 AMG?? Does that exist?? Anyway, the ML 63 AMG is R1.139mil, and again it's a MERC not a AUDI/VW... The Porsche 911 GT2 is R2.695 again, it's a FREAKING Porsche and not some AUDI/VW, for people buying in that bracket an extra 695k is not alot of money. Audi has lost the plot. Current R84.2 FSI Quattro R-Tronic is at R1.465mil, how on earth can a few extra cylinders justify half a bar more on price??? daffy, the Merc GL costs about half the price of the V12 Q7 and for the value you get in terms of on road handling and bundu bashing ability, the GL is certainly well priced, especially when compared to the Range Rover and Cayenne, both of which do not have massive boot space and 7 seats. The V12 Q7 will not be able to get its mags dirty the way the Range, GL and Cayenne can.

Who in their right mind would drop 2Mil on an Audi R8, when you can get a low mileage, almost new Gallardo for the same money? MADNESS! The V10 is certainly not worth 600k more than the V8 version.
