Mitsubishi is set to launch a new contender in SA's hatchback market in August 2014. Take a sneak peek at the new entry-level Mirage!

JOHANNESBURG - Mitsubishi's five-door hatchback, the Mirage, has arrived in South Africa on Monday (August 4 2014).

Wheels24 editor LES STEPHENSON attended the launch in Johannesburg and gave us a sneak peek at the new budget hatchback.

The new Mirage is available with a single engine choice and three specification levels - GL, GLX and GLS.

The Mirage, revealed at the 2013 Johannesburg International Motor Show, is powered by a 57kW/100Nm 1.2, three-cylinder MIVEC (Mitsubishi innovative valve-timing electronic control) petrol engine mated to a five-speed manual gearbox.

Fuel consumption is rated at 4.9-litres/100km.

Mitsubishi SA's general manager Wynand Pretorius said: "With the new Mirage the brand will be entering the segment for the first time in South Africa - and with a fun little car at that. We exhibited the new Mirage at the 2013 Joburg auto show where it received extremely positive responses from show-goers.

"In this vein, we are taking a very strong approach on the viability of the Mirage as an entry-level vehicle, specifically targeting a market where price, fuel-efficiency and ownership costs play determining roles in the buying process."

The entry-level GL is equipped with anti-lock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution, dual airbags, multi-information display, power windows (front), central locking, power steering, ISO-Fix child seat anchor, keyless entry, immobiliser, 14" steel alloys, Radio/CD player.

The GLX adds a USB port, electric mirrors, multi-function leather-trimmed steering wheel, 15-inch alloy wheels with a full alloy spare wheel, colour-coded mirrors and door-handles, accessory socket and a rear spoiler with an intergrated high-mounted stop light.

The top of the range GLS is equipped with keyless entry, climate control, power windows (with auto up/down and anti-trapping) and foglights.

Buyers can opt for a special accessory package, valued at R15 500 which adds rear park assist, satnav, an arm rest, cargo organiser, premium carpet set, lower front bumper plating enhancement.
