Porsche Cayman GTS: Got R1-million?

  • Mid-engine coupe with more power
  • 250kW 3.4-litre flat-six engine
  • 0-100 in 4.6sec, 285km/h top speed
  • Sport Chrono pack standard
  • Optional 20mm lower sports chassis available

The new Cayman GTS, according to Porsche, is its most powerful and fastest edition of the mid-engined coupe to date. It has a tweaked engine and sharpened chassis responses, setting the benchmark for sporting performance.

Porsche SA says it is not yet able to confirm when it will arrive here as designated units still need to be allocated. However, the car is available to order at anhy of its three dealers here.

The Cayman made its debut in 2005 and has earned the reputation as "a driver’s car".

The six-cylinder boxer engine in the Cayman GTS is based on the 3.4 unit in the Cayman S. Porsche says specific tuning has delivered an additional 11kW, pushing power/torque to 250kW/380Nm.

The Sport Chrono package and Porsche active suspension management systems are standard on this model, giving the driver the opportunity to modify not only the shock-absorbers but also the throttle characteristic.

Porsche says that, in conjunction with the optional seven-speed double-clutch autobox comes launch control through a Sport Plus button which helps the car to 100km/h in 4.6sec - 0.3quicker than a standard Cayman S with the same box.

With the standard manual six-speed transmission, the car reaches 285km/h and is the first mid-engined Porsche coupe to meet Euro 6 emissions standards. Porsche claims it has a combined fuel consumption of 8.2 litres/100km.

The Cayman GTS can also be specified with a new sports chassis configuration that lowers the ride height by 20mm.

A distinctivelyfront spoiler and black-finish auto-adjusting bi-xenon headlights are standard. Inside, bolstered sports seats and leather.

GTS HISTORY

Porsche says the Cayman can trace its rootsto the 904 Carrera GTS of the 1960's. Since those days, ‘GTS’  has stood for ‘Gran Turismo Sport'.

With the new model, Porsche is extending the GTS principle to the Cayman to match the Cayenne GTS and Panamera GTS.

The new Cayman GTS is available to order now in right-hand drive format - SA prices will only be available from the three local dealers - but as a guide the unadorned version costs the equivalent of just under R1-million in the UK.
