Petrol sting for SA Scorpio

Indian automaker Mahindra has launched a new petrol 4x2 variant of its Scorpio SUV in South Africa.

It's a rear-wheel drive, seven-seat SUV with a turbocharged 2.2 petrol engine capable of 115kW at 4500rpm and 280Nm from 1800-3000rpm. The engine is turns a five-speed manual gearbox.

Ashok Thakur, CEO of Mahindra SA, said: “The decision to introduce a petrol variant and to standardise the mHawk CRDe engine on all Scorpio models in South Africa follows two earlier customer benefits announced for buyers of the current third generation range introduced to South Africa in 2009.”

BORG-WARNER 'BOX

Cruise control, aircon, steering wheel audio controls and power windows are all part of the deal, along with two front air bags and anti-lock brakes.

The 4x4 derivatives have a Borg-Warner transfer box with low range and this grippier drive can be invoked electrically while on the move. No sticking in the mud while you wrestle with a stubby second gear-shifter.

The new model will retail for R209 900, R20 000 less than the least-expensive diesel variant. Which is about par for the course.
