Official: BMW M3 convertible

accreditation
BMW's M3 blows its top with this all-weather cabriolet, the third derivative of the power-hungry performance vehicle.

Although based on the drop-top 3 Series, this version is fitted with all the hallmarks of the latest M3.

Its three-piece retractable roof is constructed from lightweight steel, while the aluminium bonnet, menacing front end with oversized air intakes, flared wheel arches, low waistline and M-specific detailing signify that is another member of the powerful M-range.

As expected, power is provided by the M3-specific V8 with 309 kW on tap and maximum torque of 400 Nm at 3 900 r/min.

Fitted with the retractable roof, acceleration to 100 km/h is still a blistering quick 5.3 seconds. Top speed is limited to 250 km/h and fuel consumption on a mixed cycle is 12.9 l/100 km.

Though equipped with variable double Vanos camshaft controls, individual throttle butterflies and brake energy regeneration technology, this engine is also 15 kg lighter than the straight six it replaces. It is mated with a standard manual six-speed gearbox.

M3 convertible's body structure has been significantly reinforced to demonstrate a high level of torsional rigidity that is backed up by a comprehensive set of safety equipment, including roll bars that are automatically deployed from behind the rear seats.
