New-look Focus ST now in SA

Ford's revised Focus ST hits South Africa bearing a fresher look and some cutting-edge new features.

The Blue Oval's turbocharged 2.5-litre Focus ST has garnered a rather loyal following among hot hatch aficionados. Thankfully, the latest changes are mostly cosmetic and the 166 kW-plant has been left unaltered.

Improvements to the performance model include a new front bumper with integrated fog lamps, a larger air intake and a new honeycomb grille. The bonnet has also been altered to accommodate the new headlight cluster.

Bumpers, both at the front and rear are new too, while the tail light cluster has also been restyled.

Electric Orange, which is synonymous with the ST, and Performance Blue remain signature colour options, while ST badges on the front wings and distinctive five-spoke alloys shod with low-profile tyres further distinguish the Focus performance model.

Interior tweaks

ST's cabin remains mostly unchanged, save for Bluetooth capability that wirelessly allows the car's system to access various phone functions.

Bluetooth with voice control is offered on the five-door model and can be used to operate a cell phone, or the car's audio system and climate control.

Another new function is the Ford Power start button.

For those that need a reminder, the ST is powered by a turbocharged 2.5-litre five-cylinder engine that develops 166 kW at 6 000 r/min and has a peak torque figure of 320 Nm at 6 000 r/min.

Mated to a six-speed manual transmission, it is claimed that the ST sprints from standstill to 100 km/h in 6.8 seconds before hitting a 240-km/h top end.

Stopping power is provided by a high-performance braking system using four-piston calipers at the front and two-piston calipers on the rear discs.

The standard ABS with EBD and ESP are present, along with front and side curtain airbags, seat belt pre-tensioners and whiplash protection for the front occupants.

Ford's latest four-year/120 000 warranty is in place and services are required at every 20 000 km.
