New Seat Ibiza breaks free

accreditation
The covers are off Seat's next-generation Ibiza and how's that styling?

Designed by former Lamborghini design ace Luc Donckerwolke, the styling was always going to be a talking point, and this Ibiza does not disappoint.

The appearance is typically aggressive, with steeply raked screens and pronounced creases and curves.

Based on new Polo

All-new Ibiza shares its underpinnings with the new Volkswagen Polo expected to be revealed shortly.

Using a new version of its Agile Chassis, this car is also slightly longer than its predecessor.

This translates to better legroom for rear occupants and a larger, more useable bootspace.

At its European launch, the car will be offered with three petrol engines - a three-cylinder 1.2-litre, a 63-kW four-cylinder 1.4-litre and a 76-kW 1.6. All three will be fitted with a five-speed manual gearbox. TDI motors will be added at a later stage.

Safe and trendy

The car will also be fitted with new head and thorax front side airbags and make use of ESP and traction control.

It will also be fitted with what the company regards as a raft of class-leading options including the Group's new seven-speed DSG, hill holder, front fog lights with cornering ability and USB connectivity for a variety of music players.

New Ibiza sparks what has been described as a "major product offensive" from VW's Spanish subsidiary. Sedan and estate variants of the Ibiza are also in the pipeline, although these are probably not destined for South African fans...

The five-door hatchback pictured is coming, although VWSA says no decision has been made yet. Expect it to make landfall later this year.
