Johannesburg - Lexus' first entry into the local mid-size crossover market, the NX SUV, has arrived in South African showrooms.

The new crossover measures 4.6m long, 1.8m wide and 1.6m tall with a wheelbase of two metres and ground clearance of 190mm.

The NX is available with two four-cylinder engines (two-petrol and 2.5-litre hybrid) and four specification levels (E, EX, F-Sport and hybrid 300h EX), each equipped with all-wheel drive.

The two-litre petrol delivers 175kW/350Nm through a six-speed auto with a claimed fuel consumption of 7.9 litres/100km and CO2emissions of 184g/km. It pulls off the obligatory 0-100km/h dash in 7,1 seconds.

In addition to the turbocharged NX 200t, Lexus has also released the NX 300h, a hybrid that comes with a damping-control system engineered to increase ride comfort.

The hybrid 300h is equipped with a 2.5-litre unit and a 650V electric motor for a total output of 145kW. This combination powers a constantly variable transmission and has a claimed consumption of six litres/100km and 140g/km emissions.

It has three driving modes (eco, normal sport) while the F-Sport version gains Sport+ (stiffens steering and enhances engine response) and the hybrid has EV mode. Additionally, the F-Sport features a new Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS), capable of variable control in 30 stages.

It boasts am array of innovative technology such as the new Lexus remote touch interface with a touch pad (EX and F-Sport)  as well as the comprehensive Multi-information Display. Cargo space is rated at 500 litres, rising to 1545 litres with the seats folded. Additional space is available in four storage boxes.

The developers say the NX F-Sport version provides a more aggressive and sportier design. F-Sport exclusive items include a mesh spindle grille, new front bumper, turbine-inspired metallic alloys, black side-mirrors, exclusive interior colour options, ornament panel and sport seats.
