At launch in 2003, the S4 was only available with a close ratio six-speed manual gearbox. Now, as an option, the S4 offers an automatic transmission.
The S4's 6-speed tiptronic gearbox offers a dynamic shift program, additional Sports program and shift paddles mounted on the steering wheel.
This performance flagship utilises Audi's powerful 4.2 litre normally aspirated V8 engine which develops an impressive 253 kW at 7 000 r/min and a huge 410 Nm of torque from 3 500 r/min.
Claimed acceleration from 0?100 km/h is below 6 seconds at the coast while the top speed electronically limited to 250 km/h.
The S4 tiptronic has quattro permanent all-wheel drive.
Like manual versions of the S4, the tiptronic has a sportier stance, fully painted bumper with large air ducts, xenon headlights with contrasting titanium-coloured inner housing and chromed door mirrors.
The rear is characterised by powerful twin exhaust tailpipes and - on the sedan version - a discreet rear spoiler
The prices are R518 500 for the S4 6-speed quattro tiptronic sedan and R534 500 for the Avant.
Included in the price is a free 'S' High Performance Driving Course from the 4-Rings Driving Academy at Kyalami. The course comprises a full day's theoretical and practical instruction in an Audi S4.
