New Golf GTI heats up

2004-08-25 08:14

The 2005 Golf GTI takes most of its styling and design cues of the GTI concept car which was shown at the 2003 Frankfurt Motor Show. The new GTI will be available in three and five-door guise.

It will go on sale in South Africa in the first quarter of 2005 but at this stage we will only get the five-door version according to VWSA spokesperson Songezo Zibi.

Under the bonnet of VW's hottest new hatch is a 2-litre FSI turbo engine with a power output of 147kW.

The big news is that VW is also planning a 117 kW diesel version of the GTI. However this model will only be launched in the second half of next year.

The production GTI won't look very much different from the concept car and for example will have the same grille with a honeycomb mesh.

Other sporty touches include three large air inlets in the front bumper and the car will have a deep black body kit with sill panels.

In contrast to the "normal" Golf, the rear end makes its mark characteristically as a GTI with a striking roof spoiler and chrome twin tail pipes. The GTI will also feature 18-inch wheels.
