China appears to be a hotbed of compact SUV activity, with Mercedes-Benz choosing to unveil its segment contender, the GLK, at the Beijing show.
GLK enjoys its world debut at the Beijing Motor Show, just a few months after the GLK Freeside concept was shown at the Detroit show.
The newcomer is packed with a raft of Mercedes-Benz's proven active and passive safety systems. It should offer excellent ride characteristics thanks to its Agility Control suspension and variable 4Matic four-wheel drive system.
So, while it's definitely biased for road use, the GLK should also be very capable off road.
"The GLK rounds off our extremely successful SUV family, and transfers typical Mercedes attributes such as refinement, dynamism and safety into a compact format. This means that the bar in this market segment has now been raised considerably", Dr. Dieter Zetsche, chairman of Daimler AG said at the China show.
GLK is offered with a range of four- and six-cylinder engines, including a BlueEfficiency 220 CDI model. This engine produces 125 kW, but consumes only 6.9 l/100 km.
In addition, the show models are equipped with a range of high-end onboard features. These include systems such as the Pre Safe safety concept and Intelligent Light System (ILS), features that Mercedes-Benz claims are a first for this segment.
