The next Mazda3 sedan has been shown in its American colours at the LA auto show looking remarkably like a shrunken Mazda6…
The new zoom-zoom car, which happens to be Mazda's biggest selling vehicle across the globe, has been completely reengineered and redesigned.
The compact sedan's styling is heavily influenced by the all-new Mazda6 released in South Africa earlier this year, featuring the strong new "family face".
Apart from the external differences, the cabin has also been significantly improved. According to Mazda, the car will offer safety and comfort equipment usually reserved for bigger cars.
Engines include the current 2.0-litre four-cylinder and a new 2.5-litre petrol unit. Whether this will replace the 2.3-litre unit now seen in local models remains to be seen. Models destined for European markets will also receive smaller four-cylinder petrol and turbodiesel engines.
All detail offered thus far has been for the North American spec sedan, although the sportier five-door hatchback is expected to make its debut at the Bologna Motor Show in December.
Mazda SA has confirmed that its next-generation subcompact will be available locally from mid 2009, though exact details still need to be confirmed.
