Mitsubishi spills on new concept

GLOBAL CAR: Mitsubshi wants to build 150 000 to 200 000 units of the new car per year once production starts in 2012.

The all-new small car first referred to by Mitsubishi at a sod-turning ceremony in Thailand in December 2010, will enjoy its global unveiling at the 2011 Geneva auto show in March.

Mitsubishi will display 12 cars at the show, including models already on sale in Europe. However, it is hoped the little show car will be the star attraction.

The production car will be “compact”, “affordable” and fuel efficient, Mitsubishi said, with good manoeuvrability, easy operation and an efficient package able to seat five adults.

It is promised the car will also deliver class-leading fuel efficiency and sub-100g/km CO2 emissions. It will be fitted with an idling stop/start, regenerative braking and an all-new constantly variable transmission. Engine capacity will be in the one to 1.2-litre range.

The oddly-named Concept Global Small is planned for production from March 2012 at Mitsubishi’s new factory in Thailand and will be built for a mix of emerging and developed markets.

Initial output from the Thai factory will be around 150 000 a year.
