Volkswagen is set to contest the 2013 World Rally championship with its new Polo R WRC - one of the stunning machines on the VW stand at the 2011 Johannesburg International Motor Show.
Because of revised regulations the car will have a 220kW/350Nm 1.6 TSI Polo R at the WRC but it will be strangled a trifle by its air intake being reduced to 33mm.
The Polo R WRC will be have a full a safety cage, all-wheel drive and an aerodynamically optimised shell. Again, the meet regulations, the minimum dry weight will be 1200kg.
IN SA RALLIES FOR 2012
In the World Rally championship the technical concept of a car has to be based on the shell of a production vehicle. Substantial driving assistance systems are prohibited. The aim is to put a reasonable cap on development costs.
South African motorsport fans can look forward to the new Polo S2000 Rally car in 2012. The S200 will share most of its design with the Polo R WRC.
