Chinese automaker Foton will bring a new one-ton bakkie to SA in 2012 but you can get a preview at the upcoming Johannesburg International Motor Show.
The Tunland one-tonner will be previewed on the Foton stand.
Production of left-hand drive Tunlands will start in Beijing, China, in November; right-hand drive versions will start rolling off the lines in February 2012 and will reach South Africa a couple of months later.
TURBODIESEL ENGINE
The Tunland claims to be the largest one-ton pick-up on the market and prototypes have passed European crash tests with the hope of a four-star Euro NCAP rating.
Power comes from a 2.8 turbodiesel engine and the Tunland is capable of delivering 120kW/360Nm. A 2.4 100kW petrol engine will be available later in 2012.
All-wheel drive with a rear differential lock will be an option in SA with a six-speed ZF auto gearbox on the horizon.
The Tunland will be joined on the Foton stand by the Thunda single and double-cab bakkies already available in SA.
The Thunda range includes petrol or diesel engines, the fuel-injected 2.2 petrol unit developing 76kW/193Nm, the 2.8 turbodiesel 68kW/202Nm. Each drives through a five-speed gearbox.
