<b>TOYOTA'S NEW LOOK:</b> The Yaris Hybrid, with its petrol and electric power train, is one of the first models with the new trapezoidal look. Text.
GENEVA, Switzerland - Toyota's Yaris Hybrid has had its second official world debut at a Geneva auto show (it also featured in 2011) and will reach South Africa in June 2012.
The launch, Toyota said at the 2012 Geneva show launch, was a major step in the company’s full-hybrid roll-out for its core models in Europe and other key markets - including South Africa.
"It combines ingenious packaging and urban agility with the driving experience and efficiency of Toyota’s full hybrid power train, Hybrid Synergy Drive," the automaker said. "After the launch of the Auris HSD in Europe in 2010 (South Africa in 2011), the Yaris Hybrid is Toyota’s second core model to feature the tech."
NEW 1.5 ENGINE
It's the flagship of the Yaris range and has an aerodynamically efficient exterior and the new "face" of Toyota which, the company says, combines a more assertive trapezoid style.
The Yaris Hybrid is the first downsizing of Toyota’s HSD. It combines a new, 1.5 petrol engine with a lighter and smaller electric motor, transaxle, inverter and battery pack which, together, is 20% lighter than that of an Auris Hybrid - which helped to keep the passenger and luggage space (the latter 286 litres) identical to that of the conventional models.
The 74kW power combination, Toyota says, has a leading balance of performance and CO2 emissions in the B segment "and can frequently be driven in modes that emit zero NOx, PM and CO2". "In fact, taking data from a variety of journey types, it can be seen that the cumulative effect of the full hybrid power train leads to a high proportion (as much as 66%) of zero-emissions operation."
The car, Toyota adds, "is the most affordable full hybrid on the market". It will be available in Europe directly after the Geneva show and will reach South Africa in June 2012.
