Top Car's Wayne Batty says goodbye to his Renault Clio. It’s not a soppy farewell but the little 'automatique' did its maker proud.

The Opel GT is back!

The Opel GT - due out at the Geneva Motor Show in March

The iconic Opel GT - arguably one of the handsomest cars the German company has built - was produced between 1968 and 1973, and quite a few survive here in South Africa.

Like the original car the new GT will have a front engine and rear-wheel-drive, but it won't feature closed styling or even a hardtop convertible - instead it will be a soft-top

The car is largely based on the Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky roadsters sold in the US, and like them it will roll off the production lines of the GM plant in Wilmington, Deleware.

However, unlike the Solstice the Opel version will get real power, the Pontiac's lazy 2.4-litre Ecotic engine being replaced by a hot 2-litre Opel turbo-motor producing a healthy 194 kW, enough to propel the little two-seater from rest to 100 km/h in just six seconds and on to a top speed in excess of 230 km/h.

The car is expected to go into production in the first quarter of 2007, but there's no news yet on if, or when, it will come to South Africa.
