Top Car's Wayne Batty says goodbye to his Renault Clio. It’s not a soppy farewell but the little 'automatique' did its maker proud.

Nissan’s seminal Z-car range celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. So, obviously, there is a contemptuous limited edition model in the works.

To pay homage to four decades of rear-wheel drive, six-cylinder Z-cars Nissan will show off the European specification 370Z Black at the Geneva motor show during the first week of March.

Although the new Black edition does not boast any significant mechanical improvements over the stock 370Z, it has been embellished with all manner of styling trinkets – both inside and out.

Red calipers look cool. Brake performance? Unchanged.

Clever paint

What's the difference between a stock 370 and the Black? Well, keen followers of the Z-car range will immediately notice the darkened grey finishes on those 19-inch Rays wheels, which are contrasted by red brake calipers.

If you’re particularly clueless, a 40th anniversary emblem on the hatch door gives the game away wholesale.

Only two exterior finishes are available - black and quartz. Both paints have been treated with Nissan's Scratch Shield technology, which purportedly 'heals' the surfacing in the case of stone chip damage.

If you like red leather, you'll love the new 370Z Black. Hard to explain fetishism though...

Inside, the cabin has been reupholstered with eye-popping red leather seats and stitching. The seats are embossed with 40th anniversary logos too.

Standard infotainment specification ticks a bespoke BOSE premium audio system and Nissan's next generation combined audio and navigation system – which has been improved with more intuitive touch screen navigation.

Be warned though, those additional 40th anniversary logos and the sprayed calipers (not the mentioned the scarlet leather) inflate the 370Z's list price by nearly 10% in Black edition trim...
