2004 Mitsubishi Outlander

accreditation

The refinements are aimed increase the crossover vehicles appeal in terms of body shape, performance and safety.

One of the most significant changes is the new 2.4-litre engine, which features MIVEC (Mitsubishi Innovative Valve timing and Electronic Control) technology.

This new engine offers improved performance and better fuel efficiency, with reduced harmful emissions.

The MIVEC system employs a lightweight variable valve-timing mechanism, which regulates engine operation in low- and high-speed modes. This allows the system to perfectly match engine performance to driving conditions.

Switching smoothly from low-to high-speed cam profiles at 4 400 r/min to drive the twin intake valves on each cylinder, the 2.4-litre MIVEC engine delivers easy-to-drive performance throughout the rev range.

With 120 kW of power available at 5 650 r/min the new engine has 16 kW more power than the unit it replaces.

Torque has also been increased from 213 Nm to 220 Nm at 4 000 r/min.

The engine is mated to an INVECS-II 4-speed automatic transmission, which is equipped with a Sports Mode. This combination allows the 2005 Outlander to achieve a top speed of 192 km/h, significantly better than the 182 km/h of the previous model.

Power to the four driven wheels is delivered through the same proven 4WD system that is used in Mitsubishi?s World Rally Championship-winning Mitsubishi Lancer Evolutions.

This all-wheel-drive system, with its viscous-coupling center differential, ensures maximum traction in inclement weather driving and off-road conditions.

The Outlander?s exterior has also been refined, with styling that now includes vertically barred front grills and redesigned headlamps with projector-type low-beam lamps.

The bumpers are now over-sized, with flared fenders, side airdams, a new roof-mounted antenna and combination rear lamps with red lenses completing the exterior update. A high-mounted stop lamp is integrated in a spoiler that forms part of the redesigned tailgate.

In terms of safety, ABS with EBD is now standard equipment, in addition to the dual front airbags and side door impact bars that are carried over from the previous model.
