BMW's sportier electric city car: New i3s revealed

Munich - BMW has added a sportier model to its i3 hybrid range - the new i3s. The new derivative has a higher output from its electric motor, model-specific chassis technology, and different styling cues. BMW also says its dynamically better than the normal i3. 

The new models will make their debut at the Frankfurt motor show in September. (Wheels24 will be at the Frankfurt show offering live coverage). 

BMW confirmed the i3s will be available in the fourth quarter of 2018.

The automaker is quick to point out that more than 80% of the surfaces visible to the passengers are made from recycled materials or renewable resources.

More power

The new model has 10kW and 20Nm than the normal i3 to boast figures of 135kW/270Nm from its lithium-ion high-voltage battery. BMW says the i3s has an updated drive system includes modified motor control and specific taper roller bearings for better power delivery at a higher revs.

For those who want to chuck the i3s around a mountain pass, the diminutive car boasts a sports suspension with specially developed springs, dampers and anti-roll bars. There's also a sport mode.

A claimed 0-100km/h sprint time of 6.9 seconds is quoted with the i3s running out of puff at 160km/h. 

The i3s' claimed electric range is 280kms and fear not, BMW will offer its REx (Range Extender) version in SA.

A 28kW two-cylinder range extender petrol engine is available as an option for both the new i3 and the new i3s. The engine drives a generator that produces power as required while driving to charge the high-voltage battery.

BMW says the car’s overall range in everyday use is extended by 150kms, increasing it from around 180kms to a maximum of 330kms.

What else is new? 

Well the updated models receive plethora of safety and tech goodies, including: Advanced Real-Time Traffic Information, City Collision Mitigation, Frontal Collision Warning Daytime Pedestrian Protection Active Driving Assistant, Active Cruise Control, Stop/Go, ConnectedDrive Services, City Collision Mitigation, Park Distance Control, and Apple CarPlay.

Styling differences on the i3s include an additional 40mm of track width compared to the i3, giving it a squat, sportier look (it also has black wheel arch borders).

Exclusive 20-inch light wheels in double-spoke design that are 20mm wider than the previously available versions also make the i3s visually impressive.
