Volvo changes the sedan game

PREVIEW: The Concept You, according to Volvo, gives a fair indication of the brand's next S80 model.

Volvo provides another glimpse at its future with the Concept You at the Frankfurt auto show.

A vision of the Swedish marque’s next large sedan, the Concept You builds on the Concept Universe shown at the Shanghai auto show in April 2011.

"Concept You gives a good indication of what you can expect from our next large sedan,” Volvo CEO Stefan Jacoby said.

Both concept cars are being used to gauge reaction from the public as Volvo forges ahead with the design of its next S80.

For now, the Concept You combines coupé-like styling with a seriously state-of-the-art interior that is controlled via smart pad technology, which the carmaker hopes will lead the development of “super-functional connectivity features in cars”.

Much like the smart phones and pads that provided inspiration, a number of touch screens replace buttons and controls within the cabin while at the same time creating an uncluttered interior.

However, the company also wants to remove some of life’s hassles by creating cars that are intuitive and uncomplicated.

One touch screen in the centre console is only activated when the driver looks at it (it registers eye movements via a hidden infrared camera) while sensors register hand movements that trigger the infotainment system.

This system also showcases an Alpine audio system with a "Fresh Air" subwoofer that uses air from outside the car to boost the sound on the inside of the car.

The cabin holds four individual seats finished in suede and leather, while swathes of walnut and aluminium are used for the finer detailing. The wooden floor is covered with a specially-designed hand carpet.

The Concept You’s look is completed on the outside with 21” polished aluminium wheels shod with Pirellis and the concept’s light blue paintwork.
