Despite its humble beginnings, Kia’s become a major player in the global auto industry in terms of both sales volume and acclaimed design.

Thanks to Peter Schreyer, the iconic German designer Kia poached from Audi, the South Korean auto giant has won a collection of design awards in the last two years.

This blend of sales momentum and critical industrial design acclaim has made Kia particularly bullish about its marketing prospects - and now the Koreans are looking at going premium.

Kia’s show-stopper at the 2011 Frankfurt auto show is its new GT Concept – just the kind of thing to have European premium brands worried. Why? Well, it’s an indication of where Kia’s marketing strategy is heading: upmarket.

The GT Concept is a rear-wheel drive production platform with  rear-hinged doors for second-row passenger access and a host of interesting (imitation?) styling details, such as those Aston Martin-copy front canards, flanking its grille.

The GT Concept is 4.69m bumper-to-bumper, 1.89m across and stands 1.38m tall.

Power comes from a 3.3-litre direct-injection petrol V6, turbocharged to produce 294kW/534Nm; driving the rear-wheels courtesy of an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Obviously the production version will lose many of the concept’s styling details, but the powertrain is sure to be carried over. Are the Germans worried? They should be...

The latest from the Frankfurt show.
