Family bus of the future

A European auto show is just not the same without an off-beat concept from one of the resident French automakers so, true to form, Citroën obliges ahead of the 2011 Frankfurt show with the Tubik.

More a concept bus than a regular concept car, the Tubik is seen as "a high-tech executive shuttle” with its main order of business that travel should be fun.

Inspired by Citroën’s Type H or ‘TUB’ van, the luxurious concept is a nine-seater packed with technology, styling and comfort to further set it apart, the automaker said.

GULL-WINGED GLORY

It's 4.8m long and is about two metres wide and tall with a two-tone body (metallic grey for the body with white at both ends to mark the position of the diesel engine - at the front - and the electric motor at the rear).

Two large doors close flush with the body panels while the large gull-wing cabin door covers the side of the vehicle.

COSY: Tubik has three rows of seats but the cabin can be arranged for a number of purposes.

The concept incorporates a lounge-style cocoon for the ultimate in relaxation, although the independent seats can be arranged in a number of ways. The "living area" effect is bolstered by the Tubik’s felt seats, silken door panels and leather floor. A semi-circular screen and high-definition surround-sound will ensure parents never again feel the same way about Barbie or Barney…

The driving position is encapsulated in a “cyclotron” that groups the seat, pedals, steering wheel and head-up display in one form. A biometric system identifies the driver by fingerprint recognition and additional technological aids include reversing and rear-view cameras.

DIESEL HYBRID

The Tubik is powered by Citroën’s Hybrid4 technology, a full-hybrid diesel drivetrain to ensure the concept has CO2 emissions at a level comparable to a regular family sedan. The 22” wheels run on narrow, low rolling-resistance tyres.

Citroën’s Hydractive suspension technology adjusts to the load to keep the Tubik level and automatically lowers the people-carrier at speed to make it more aerodynamic.
