The Volkswagen Golf will be the fourth variant from Wolfsburg to receive the BlueMotion badge on its grille, indicating fuel consumption of just 4.5 l/100 km.
Following BlueMotion versions of the Polo, Passat and Passat wagon, the eco-friendly Golf will be shown at the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show.
Powered by a 77-kW TDI engine with 250 Nm on tap, the BlueMotion Golf boasts fuel consumption of 4.5 l/100 km and CO2 emissions that have been slashed from 135 g/km to 119 g/km.
For the BlueMotion version, a software tweaking to the engine management system reduces the idling speed, which, combined with a particulate filter and longer gear ratios (for lower engine speeds) helps the improve the engine's emission levels.
A lowered chassis and 15-inch wheels driven at higher air pressure and optimised for low rolling resistance also contributes to reduced drag.
Top speed on this Golf also increases from 187 km/h to an electronically limited 190 km/h.
VWSA has said that the Golf BlueMotion has not yet been confirmed for local introduction, but research is being conducted.
