Chunky Panda hits Frankfurt

Fiat’s third generation Panda was unveiled at the Frankfurt Auto Show showing minor styling changes and increased interior space.

In terms of looks, the Panda remains very much the same, featuring several cues taken from its predecessor with its third window design, wheel arches and vertical rear lights, which are shorter on the new model.

VERSATILE

The front sports rectangular lights instead of the current model's round light housing. The grille has been reduced in size.

Inside is where the new Panda shines with a sliding rear seat and front back rest which can be folded into a mobile picnic table.

FOUR DIFFERENT ENGINES

Power will be derived from four different engines; a 62.5kW 900cc TwinAir Turbo, a two-cylinder 48kW 900cc Aspirated TwinAir, a 51kW 1.2-litre petrol, which will be available in South Africa, and the 55kW 1.3 Multijet diesel.

All models feature a stop-start mechanism and gear advisory messages along with Fiat's Dualogic manual transmission.

Four airbags, ABS with BAS, pre-tensioner seatbelts and anti-whiplash front headrests complete the safety component. The new model also features an auto-brake function in the event of a collision will perform an emergency stop at speeds below 30km/h.

A large 'Skydome' sunroof will be available as an optional feature. Production of the Panda will begin later in 2011 and expect the new model to arrive in 2012.
