BMW calls its X6 concept the "world's first Sports Activity Coupe"... We think it looks like a sports coupe on stilts, but could BMW be on to something?
Arguably the most dynamic-looking X model yet, the long wheelbase, short front and long rear overhangs and sloping roofline.
Its genetic link to existing BMW SAVs (Sports Activity Vehicles) through the raised ride height and enlarged kidney grille is clear, though the manufacturer's attempts to highlight the concept's sporting ability is present too.
Dynamic Performance Control is a new BMW innovation making its debut on the concept X6. This drivetrain and chassis control system is combined with BMW's existing xDrive all-wheel drive system to alter drive forces as required and direct this power to the rear wheels when necessary.
However, this system also stabilises the vehicle when under power or when the engine is in overrun.
Detecting possible over- or understeer, it varies the distribution of power between the wheels for more precise control and greater directional stability.
A production version of this X6 concept will spawn a whole new market segment, though it has to be asked whether another crossover SAV is necessary...
