Although the BMW X1 is no big secret any more, after the carmaker released its own semi-disguised “spy” photos a few weeks ago, official images of the newcomer have now been “leaked” on the internet.
Also, there are no surprises to the X1’s design as it is very much a copy of the X1 concept car, which was shown at the 2008 Paris Motor Show.
Furthermore the X1 follows BMW’s latest design trend with the front design mimicking the new 7 Series and the 5 Series GT. At the rear the taillights are reminiscent to those of the 3 Series and X5, however, one can’t help but to note the design similarities with Audi’s Q5.
Very little official detail is yet available about the X1 but it shares its full-time all-wheel-drive platform with the upcoming MINI Crossman.
We expect that engine options will start with a pair of 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engines developing 106kW and 126kW, moving through to a 3.0-litre straight-six making 197kW.
There will also be a range of diesel engines based on BMW’s 2.0-litre four-cylinder unit, with various power outputs of 106kW, 132kW and 152kW.
The X1 will take on smaller SUVs such as the Toyota RAV4 and VW Tiguan, while the next generation X3 will be position more upmarket.
The South African introduction of the X1 will be early in 2010.
