UNO ROADSTER: Italian two-seater convertibles are not the sole preserve of Ferrari. This is Fiat’s Uno Roadster Concept.

Fiat’s Uno may not be locally available anymore, yet enthusiasts of the Italian brand’s city car will be heartened to know there is a new convertible in the works.

Set to debut at the São Paulo auto show next week, the Uno Roadster is a concept based on the latest Novo version of the city car, built in Brazil since the beginning of this year.

Mini Roadster style

Fiat is massive in Brazil, thanks to its early adoption of ethanol technology - which powers most of Brazil’s personal transport.

As such it is unsurprising to see the company pool resources to produce a show-stopper for the local auto show in one of its most important global markets.

In classic Roadster style the Uno features a large aft deck contrasted by a blunt rear.

The simple shape and clever details cue Fiat’s small car design heritage perfectly.

Mechanically the Uno Roadster gains a 1.4l MultiAir engine producing 110kW.

In an attempt to counter a loss of structural integrity due to the soft-top configuration, Fiat’s engineers have strengthened the Uno’s chassis accordingly and enacted a 20mm ride height reduction to improve stability.

Despite the Uno Roadster’s status being purely conceptual at the São Paulo auto show, this little soft-top could make a worthy production car – especially with small cars (thanks to down-sizing) being very much in vogue right now.
