VW shows curvy Passat coupe

2008-01-14 10:00
Volkswagen's stately "gentleman's cruiser" is now even more appealing as the wraps come off the Passat CC coupe concept at the Detroit Motor Show.

Exquisite curves typify the Passat CC (rather befuddling since it does not have a folding hardtop...) that is yet another new face to join the growing collection of "four-door coupes".

The Passat-based coupe shows bodywork that has been completely redesigned to accommodate the more fluid lines and the dramatically swooping roofline.

It will be powered by a variety of four- and six-cylinder petrol and turbodiesel engines with outputs ranging from 103 kW to 220 kW for the range-topping 3.6-litre V6.

Transmissions, too, will comprise six-speed manual and six-speed Tiptronic gearboxes.

Dynamically, the coupe is also claimed to display more athletic characteristics with the use of an adjustable Dynamic Drive Control (DDC) suspension system with "normal", "sport" and "comfort" modes.

Safety systems include ESP and up to eight airbags.

Said to be packed with a range of new state-of-the-art features, attention to detail is another key focus with the four-seater. It gains individual sport seats for all passengers, along with new instruments, trim options and navigation systems for the interior.

New features include a lane hold assist system that corrects steering when a vehicle starts to drift from a lane and park assist that automatically guides the coupe into a parking bay at the touch of a button.

In addition, Passat CC gains a Panorama power vent sunroof, much like the first sliding roof panel seen on the Eos, that comprises the front roof section to the B-pillars.

In production guise, Passat CC will likely become the most exclusive model in the manufacturer's line-up, ostensibly picking up where the ill-fated Phaeton left off.

Volkswagen SA has said there are no plans as yet to bring the production version of the Passat CC to South Africa.
