The Jeep Compass - due here next year.
This new Jeep SUV is based on the Jeep Compass concept, which was originally shown at the 2005 Detroit Motor Show.
According to Jeep the Compass is an all-new product that "combines the packaging and functionality of an SUV with the performance, handling, fuel economy and price of a compact car or small pickup".
It is aimed at popular soft-roaders such as the Toyota RAV4, Hyundai Tucson, Honda CR-V and Kia Sportage.
The head of Chrysler-Jeep in South Africa, David Elmore, told Wheels24 in Detroit that the Compass is destined for South Africa and will probably arrive here early in 2007.
The Compass is also Jeep's first front-wheel-drive based product, but there will be 4x4 derivatives too.
This new model is still unmistakably a Jeep as it features the brand's trademark seven-slot grille, round headlamps and trapezoidal wheel openings.
Under the Compass' bonnet is a 125 kW 2.4-liter engine with dual variable valve timing (VVT). It comes with either a five-speed manual transmission or a CVT autobox.
A 2-litre turbo diesel engine will be available for markets outside North America.
