Meet VW's MX-5
Volkswagen's Concept BlueSport shows the rumoured Golf-based roadster moving towards becoming a reality.
The mid-engined two-seater, finished in Flex Silver with a bright contrasting orange canvas top, is powered by a 2.0-litre TDI engine which develops 132 kW at 4 200 r/min and has a peak torque figure of 350 Nm at 1 750 r/min.
A six-speed DSG dual-clutch transmission drives the rear wheels.
According to the manufacturer, the concept hits 100 km/h from a standing start in 6.6 seconds before powering on to a top speed of 226 km/h. Fuel consumption is quoted as a meagre 4.3 l/100 km.
Also helping to reduce the car's impact on its environment is its Eco mode with automatic stop-start function and energy regeneration.
Together they are said to reduce consumption by up to 0.2 l/100 km. Volkswagen quotes a CO2 emission figure of 113 g/km.
Volkswagen is adamant that this remains a design study with no immediate plans for production, but mimicking, as it does, styling seen on Scirocco and Golf VI, we could be seeing a lot more of this concept.
Just shy of 4 metres in length, the BlueSport's styling is said to mark an evolution for the Wolfsburg-based manufacturer with its short overhangs and LED light clusters.
