With 373 kW and 1 000 Nm of torque it's the most powerful diesel 4x4 on the market, and rockets the big 4x4 from rest to 100 km/h in just 5.5 seconds and quickly on to an electronically limited 250 km/h.
The beauty of the engine, apart from its absolute power, is that its maximum torque is available from as low as 1 750 r/min, and right on to 3 000 r/min, giving incredible pulling power all through the rev range.
The engine is coupled to a tiptronic auto 'box, yet Audi promises overall fuel consumption in the 8.4 litres/100 km bracket.
Other features on the car include new front and tail treatment similar to that found on the Audi A6 and A8.
The car is expected to go on sale in Europe at the end of this year, but there's no news yet on possible SA availability, as Audi has only just released its 3-litre V6 diesel and 4.2-litre V8 petrol versions.
