More power to Mahindra bakkies

Mahindra’s Scorpio bakkies have been given a power surge with the adoption of a new four-cylinder, common-rail injected,  2.2-litre turbodiesel engine across the range.

Called the mHawk CRDe engine, it was previously only available on the two automatic Scorpio SUV's sold in South Africa, but is now being rolled out across the range in line with customer feedback, the company said.

The intercooled four-cylinder uses a Bosch common-rail fuel injection system with variable geometry turbocharging and is lighter than the unit it replaces. The Euro 3-compliant engine generates 87kW and 270Nm from 1600 to 2800rpm and it mated to a five-speed manual transmission. The previous 2.5 turbodiesel made 74kW at 3800rpm and 258Nm at 1800rpm…

RIGOROUS TESTING


The mHawk engine has been tested in some harsh environments, including the Sierra Nevada in the US and in India at an altitude of 3000m. In South Africa, this engine is available in both single and double cab derivatives with either two- or four-wheel drive.

The updated Scorpio bakkie also benefits from a standard three-year or 60 000km service plan and the addition of an Eaton mechanical rear differential lock for better traction in challenging conditions.
