More choice: Mazda2 gets a boot

A sedan version has been added to the Mazda2 range – four models that pretty much follow the design of the original hatchback that was introduced back in October, 2007.

Doreen Mashinini, Mazda SA’s marketing manager, told Wheels24:  ““The B segment is an important market for us - expanding the Mazda2 range with a sedan gives customers an even greater choice.

“The sedan has the same design tone as the hatchback but with a more refined and mature look – though the dynamic driving characteristics are the same.”

The sedan is available in four versions:  1.3 Active, 1.5 Active, 1.5 Dynamic and 1.5 Individual.

The front of the two models is the same but the car’s profile, Mazda says, “is slightly more subtle and refined, with a single, cohesive look”.

Power windows

The C pillar – an obvious point of difference for a sedan and a hatch – has, the automaker says, a forward and downward curve at the bottom of the leading edge to give an impression of sturdy support for inputs from the rear wheel.

“The trailing edge has a taut downward curve toward the boot lid to maintain the unity essential in a sedan design.”

The entry level Mazda2 1.3 and 1.5 Active models have aircon, remote-controlled central locking, power windows front and rear, height adjustable steering wheel, AUX Jack and radio/single CD with MP3 compatibility.

Safety features include anti-lock brakes with electronic brake-pressure distribution, two front airbags and IsoFix kiddie-seat anchors.

KEEPING STUFF SAFE: Some buyers will appreciate the boot's better security.

The 1.5 Dynamic adds 15” alloy rims, body colour door releases and boot-lid spoiler, front fog lights, driver information system, leather on the steering wheel and gear shifter and audio controls on the steering wheel.

Electric steering

Top of the range is the 1.5 Individual with 16” alloy rims, sports suspension, auto aircon, curtain airbags front and rear, side airbags and smart-start keyless entry.

The 1.3 engine is capable of 63kW at 6000 and 122Nm at 3500rpm, the 1.5 76kW at 6000rpm and 135Nm at 4000rpm and a New European Driving Cycle fuel consumption figure of 5.8 litres/100km.

SHARED ESSENTIALS: The Mazda2 sedan and hatch share cabins.

The 1.5’s figure is 6.4 litres/100km.

Electric power-steering is standard across the range.

The last word from Mashinini: “The Mazda2 hatchback has won critical acclaim locally and impressed customers with its extensive capabilities and technologies - the sedan builds on this foundation.”

All Mazda2 models are delivered with a four-year or 60 000km service plan and a three-year or 100 000km warranty. Service intervals 15 000km.
