TOKYO, Japan - Mitsubishi will launch its fifth-generation Triton at the 2015 Geneva auto show in March.

According to Mitsubishi, the new Triton has been developed as a “sport utility truck” with improved “reliability, toughness, comfort and manoeuvrability”.

It will be launched in Europe in 2015 and in South Africa early in 2016.

Powering the new bakkie is a new 2.4 MIVEC turbocharged diesel tuned to deliver 133kW/430NM or 113kW /380Nm, mated to a new six-speed manual or auto with paddle shifts.

According to Mitsubishi the new Triton is much quieter inside compared to the outgoing model due to its new diesel engine and noise-reducing measures. It has enlarged body mounts and extended rear suspension leafs for a smoother ride.

Inside, Mitsubishi says, buyers can expect "a significant perceived-quality step-up combined with better seating and driving position for a more comfortable driving experience".

The new Triton has been enhanced with a reinforced body and, says Mitsubishi, “seven percent greater torsional rigidity”.

Its Super Select 4WD II system allows drivers to choose from four driving modes with a rotating selector similar to its Pajero cousin. In terms of crash protection it has seven air bags (two front, side and curtain and one for the driver's knees) as well as active stability and traction control, trailer stability assist, hill-start assist and lane departure warning.

New xenon headlights light up the night; diode lights run during the day.

New features:

  • Rear doors for Club Cab versions
  • Keyless entry with stop/start
  • Cruise control with adaptive speed limiter
  • Dual auto aircon
  • Adjustable steering wheel
  • Reversing camera
  • Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) radio
