Mere weeks after Mercedes-Benz revealed sketches of its new baby commercial vehicle, the Citan has been revealed in all its glory. Now that’s quick!
But before you rush off praising German expediency, bear in mind this is the first project borne out of Merc’s partnership with French automaker Renault. The Citan, then, is essentially a rebadged Kangoo and will reportedly be built alongside the French commercial vehicle at the automaker’s Mauberge facility in France.
The Mercedes-Benz Citan is the latest addition to the German automaker’s extensive range of commercial vehicles, which includes the popular Sprinter and Vito models.
USED CAR, NEW LOOK
The Citan will enjoy its public unveiling at the IAA Commercial Vehicle Show in Hannover in September, 2012.
Ahead of its debut, Mercedes-Benz has revealed its Citan will be offered in three lengths and in three model variants, including a crew bus and a panel van.
One of the Citan’s stand-out features is its incorporation, for the first time, of the Mercedes-Benz van range’s new family look with its three louvres, bolder headlamps and the V-shape of the bonnet.
The van’s interior is said to be fitted to a high standard, too. The front occupants receive padded seats with lateral support and the instrument panel is designed around the driver.
Safety features include adaptive electronic stability control (that takes the vehicle load into consideration), ABS, traction control and vehicle dynamic control.
WAIT FOR IT
Three turbodiesel direct-injection engines (with outputs ranging from 55kW to 81kW) along with an 84kW supercharged petrol engine packed with energy-saving BlueEfficiency measures have been earmarked for the range. Five- and six-speed transmissions are standard.
Mercedes-Benz SA said it may have more news about the availability of Citan here after its September launch.
“We will then do a feasibility study on this vehicle and would probably be looking at 2013 if we do bring this (Citan) in (to South Africa).”
