McLaren 478kW 650S at Geneva - video

• Reaches 0-100km/h in three seconds
• Faster than rival ‘stripped-out’ road racers
• Coupe and Spider variants for launch at Geneva

LONDON, England - McLaren’s first 650S Coupe and Spider, fresh off the production line at its production centre in Woking, England, will make its global debut at the 2014 Geneva International Motor Show.

Powering the new model is a 3.8 litre V8 Twin Turbo capable of 478kW/678Nm  and mated to a seven-speed SSG. The V8 enables the 650S to 0-100km/h in three seconds to a top speed of 333km/h.

BUILDING ON THE 12C

Its performance put the latest McLaren sports car one second quicker than the iconic McLaren F1 road car to 200km/h.

This represents a sprint time to 200 km/h more than half a second quicker than the rapid 12C, which continues in production. Fuel consumption is rated at 11.7litres/100km with emissions of 275 g/km.

The 650S measures 4.5m long, 2m wide, 1.1m tall and a has a wheelbase of 2.6m. Carbon ceramic brakes sit behind unique ‘650’ alloys with Pirelli P Zero Corsa tyres.

McLaren CEO Mike Flewitt said: “The McLaren 650S represents 50 years of road and racing car know-how. Everything we’ve learned from the 12C and the McLaren P1 has gone into this car, creating a car with the widest breadth of capabilities of any production supercar. It’s also a new benchmark in pure driving excitement.”

Inside, it's equipped with satnav, Bluetooth, digital radio (Europe), audio streaming and voice controls and leather trim. Optional extras include fixed-back carbon fibred race seats (based on those found in the McLaren P1), power-adjustable steering column , reversing camera and carbon fibred trim.

The new McLaren 650S Coupe retails for the equivalent of R3.4-million and the Spider variant from R3.8-million.
