The all-new Mazda CX-5 has hit South Africa with a bold new look and a full suite of innovative Skyactiv technologies.

The CX-5, which had its international debut at the 2011 Frankfurt auto show, is the first of a new wave of Mazdas that show off the automaker’s new Kodo design language, said to be “inspired by the cheetah as it moves in the wild”. Hmmm.
As the first Mazda built with the entire range of SkyActiv technology, the CX-5 comes with the highly rigid yet lightt SkyActiv body that uses a straighter, more continuous, frame to distribute loads more effectively.
SMARTER ENGINE TECH
Also new are the fuel-saving Skyactiv technologies into the engine, transmission and chassis - all completely redesigned. The CX-5 will be powered by a new two-litre petrol engine that, Mazda says, consumes between 6.8 (manual) and 6.9 litres/100km (auto) of fuel.
The compression ratio of 13:1 is a central feature to the new and light engine thanks to its new 4-2-1 exhaust system and special pistons that show reduced friction over rival two-litre petrol engines. The Skyactiv unit develops 114kW at 6000rpm and 200Nm of torque at 4000rpm and – depending on specification – is mated to either a six-speed manual or auto transmission.
A new front suspension structure allows the engine to break away from the suspension cross-members during a crash and maximises energy absorption by creating a larger crumple zone.
The cabin is described as driver-orientated and spacious enough for five people and their luggage.
EXTRA FEATURES
It’s said to be safe, too, with stability and traction control standard across the range, along with anti-lock brakes, electronic brake-pressure distribution and emergency braking assistance.
Additional features include bi-xenon headlights that swivel, hill-start assistance and front, side and curtain airbags. IsoFix anchors are also available on each model.
All CX-5 units are delivered with a three-year roadside assistance plan, a five-year or 90 000km service plan and a four-year or 120 000km warranty. Service intervals are 15 000km.
