Makeover time for MX-5

An upgrade to Mazda’s much-loved MX-5 roadster is imminent, promising better safety features and smarter equipment - and it'll be here before the end of 2012

The updated MX-5 has a new front bumper that Mazda says is more aerodynamic, while inside the cabin the panels and steering wheel have also been given a makeover.

NOT JUST A PRETTY FACE

More than cosmetic, the MX-5’s update also extends to driver involvement. Throttle movement and accelerator travel have been adjusted to give drivers better control when accelerating and on winding roads.

Additionally, a revised vacuum brake-booster and a new acceleration control system kick in when the driver gets off the brake and jumps back on the accelerator for more controlled braking and smoother acceleration.

Pedestrian safety is also better taken care of with a new “active bonnet” that automatically lifts when a pedestrian impact is detected to absorb the impact energy and soften the blow. The new front bumper design also better protects pedestrians’ legs in crashes.

The facelifted MX-5 will be available in South Africa by December 2012.
