The new power train option widens the range of engines and transmissions available on the Jeep Cherokee - a Jeep vehicle that has not only captivated traditional Jeep fans, but has also attracted a new generation of 4x4 vehicle buyers who value on-road refinement and off-road ruggedness.
>Debuting earlier than originally expected, the Cherokee is now available with a new 2.8 common-rail turbo diesel (CRD) engine mated to a five-speed automatic transmission.
The 2.8 CRD engine provides power and responsive acceleration with the ease of a smooth-shifting automatic transmission.
The engine produces 110 kW of power and 360 Nm of torque.
The 545RFE five-speed automatic overdrive transmission, new to the Cherokee and also used in the Grand Cherokee, features driver-adaptive shifting that allows the transmission to learn a driving style and adapt the shift characteristics accordingly.
This powertrain enhancement joins the existing 2.5 CRD engine with five-speed manual transmission; 3.7 V6 PowerTech petrol engine with four-speed automatic transmission; and 2.4 PowerTech petrol engine with five-speed manual transmission.
"Jeep Cherokee boasts the largest range in the SUV market, there truly is a model for all tastes. Two diesel and two petrol derivatives will ensure Jeep further cements its position as the undisputed leader in the segment," says Jeep's Guy Franken.
"The CRD Automatic will be available from dealerships in the next couple of weeks and will carry a price premium of R10 000 over manual CRD Limited and Sport models. This aggressive price positioning further emphasizes Jeep's commitment to affordability."
