The first images of Hyundai’s new i-oniq concept car have been released ahead of the vehicle's debut at the 2012 Geneva auto show.
The i-oniq is an electric sports hatchback with a range-extending petrol engine. The concept car is powered by a one-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine which is mated, via a generator, to a lithium ion electric motor capable of 80kW.
In electric mode, the i-oniq has a range of 120km; combined with the petrol engine can cover as much as 700km while producing only 45g/km of CO2.
Hyundai stylists chose dynamic proportions to create i-oniq’s shape and the concept model features a "penthouse roof" and diode lights.
At 4.4m, the i-oniq seats four with passengers benefiting from a lounge-style space featuring sculpted surfaces inspired by musical instruments.
Allan Rushforth, senior vice-president of Hyundai Europe, said: “The i-oniq was created to reflect the new thinking that runs through the Hyundai brand.
"It has a bold design, inside and out, that provokes contemplation on the future of automotive possibilities, and a power train that highlights one of the ways in which we could power future products – wrapped in a package that exudes premium qualities."

DYNAMIC DESIGN: Intended to convey the latest from Hyundai’s designers, the i-oniq evolves the company’s fluidic design seen in the Sonata and Elantra.
