MOVING TO THE FAST LANE: Chinese automaker Geely is ready to up the ante with the acquisition of several new brands to help the company lose its "compact car" image.
Geely is determined to play with the big boys with the acquisition of several brands in the automotive world which will help the Chinese automaker expand technologies and product range.

The South African market anticipates the arrival of the EC7 in May 2013 which will mark the introduction of Geely’s new flagship sub brand, Emgrand.

GROWING OPTIONS

Geely’s new 1.3 turbo engine will be added to the EC7’s range later in the year. The automaker has also unveiled its proposed new engine for the sedan and hatch, which will also be added to the range before the end of 2013.

MD of Geely South Africa, Henri Meistre, said: “The EC7 will be launched in South Africa in mid May with the 1.8 engine, we won't have the new engine in the EC7 right away, but will offer it as soon as it becomes available in right-hand drive configuration.”

“We will have a much better idea on availability of this engine and other products after the 2013 Shanghai auto show.”

The show will take place from April 21-29.

The 1.3-litre four-cylinder engine will deliver around 100kW/190Nm and will be one of a range of small turbocharged engines being developed by Geely.

TEAM WORK

Currently Geely and Volvo (taken over by the private Chinese company in 2010) are jointly developing a range of smaller green engines. Three turbo engines are on the cards: a one-litre, 1.3 and 1.8, along with “fuel stratified injection” technology.

Apart from taking over Manganese Bronze Holdings in 2012, the maker of the iconic London black cabs, Geely has also bought out the Australian transmission manufacturer DSI, and is now developing six-speed manual and auto transmissions which are expected to be available for the EC7.

Geely International is expected to showcase a number of new models and concepts at the 2013 Shanghai auto show among them SUV, a new MPV, a new sports car and the latest in efficient engine technology.
