New GTIs star at Worthersee fest

If you’re a fan of Volkswagen’s sportier GTI off-shoots, we’re guessing you’d really enjoy a twirl around the annual Wörthersee saamtrek in Austria. Take a look at the hottest exhibits.

The 2012 GTI Meeting at Wörthersee will see Volkswagen displays such as the Golf GTI Cabriolet, the Polo R-WRC and Street Edition special models, along with two additional Golf GTI concept cars.

POTENT PETITES

The Polo WRC Street concept manifests VW's vision of taking motor racing to the streets. The WRC Street previews a sportier range that will be launched late in 2013, the automaker said, although few additional details were provided.

The little sports star is distinguished by its rear spoiler and diffuser, sports suspension and R-WRC inscriptions and a potent 162kW, two-litre TSI engine is responsible for the fire-power.

The WRC Street is accompanied by the Polo R-WRC, which VW Motorsport’s head of development Ulrich Hackenberg calls "the hottest Polo ever”. The road-going race prototype is set to travel the globe in 2013 to visit a number of WRC races.

Despite all the attention focused on the Polo, big brother Golf has a few attention-grabbers of its own.

BLACK AND RED CABIN

The GTI Black Dynamic is the work of nine VW apprentices – four women and five men – and shows off an interesting black exterior finish with red accents and a lowered sports suspension. The students’ interpretation of "a classic sports car" also features a 265kW TSI engine and a 1800W nine-speaker audio system that fills the entire boot.

In keeping with the monochromatic trend, the Golf GTI White Concept also on display at Wörthersee is characterised by its matte Oryx White matte paintwork offset by a contrasting black and red cabin.

The cabin is fitted with Nappa leather sports seats, contrasting red detail stitching on the steering wheel, handbrake lever and door armrests and the door sill trim bears the GTI logo and honeycomb pattern in in matte white and aluminium.

The VW Golf Edition 35, recently introduced to South Africa, may have been a top attraction at the 2011 Wörthersee although VW SA has said none of the cars seen at the 2012 edition (when they eventually make production) have so far been stamped "export to SA".

The 31st GTI Festival at Wörthersee in Austria will end on Saturday (May 19, 2012).
