Mercedes-Benz South Africa has launched its new flagship model in the S-Class range, the V12 bi-turbo S 600 L - long-wheel base model.

STUTTGART, Germany - Mercedes-Benz has updated its range of special protection models with the new S600 Guard, based on the current S-Class but taking its passenger protection level to Class VR9 for both glass and bodywork.

Comfort and pace have not been ignored: Airmatic suspension, a V12 engine and 'intelligent' driver-assistance systems are included and the armouring is included during bodyshell production when protective components of special steel are introduced to body cavities.

Special aramide and other components provide additional splinter protection and made even more intrusion-protective with overlapping at particularly critical points. All glass is coated with polycarbonate to protect the occupants from splinters.

Mercedes says the "interaction between all the components provides the occupants with a highly effective protective space which not only includes ballistic protection but also comprehensive protection against explosive devices" - the latter even at close range.

Innovative underbody armouring almost entirely covers the belly of the car - for the first time.

The S600 Guard is for the first time - as the only car in its segment - available as either a four or five-seater. It delivers, Mercedes says, superior performance thanks to its V12 petrol engine which now generates 390kW/830Nm for its 7G-Tronic auto transmission.

Mercedes-Benz offers further optional extras developed for the S-Guard, among them:
Opaque roller blinds for all rear glass.
• Heatable windscreen and side windows.
Automatic fire-extinguisher.
Emergency fresh air systemto counter smoke or irritant gases.
Hydraulic window lifts.
• Fridge for the rear seats.

All Mercedes-Benz franchises worldwide can, the automaker says, service, maintain or repair the Guard models.
