Fiat SA launches big daddy 500L

CAPE TOWN, South Africa - Fiat South Africa has launched the bigger version of its 500 in Cape Town this week, the 500L.

TWO ENGINES

The 500L is being launched with one petrol engine and two derivatives, Easy and Lounge, and also a diesel engine. The petrol1.4-litre Fire, 16-valve unit is good for 70kW and a 100km/h run in 12.3 seconds, top speed is 170km/h.

The 1.6-litre Multijet II turbodiesel, four-cylinder 16-valve unit pushes out 77kW and does zero to 100km/h sprint in 11.3 seconds. It has a top speed of 181km/h and will only be available in Lounge trim. Both engines are mated to a six-speed manual gearbox and the cars are front-wheel drive.

It has an independent Macpherson front suspension and a semi-independent torsion beam axle in the rear. Standard features include 16" with steel covers or alloy rims, or optional 17" alloys; park sensors, remote keyless entry, hill start assistance and day time running lights.

Fiat SA will extend the 500L range in 2014 with the addition of the 500L Trekking and Living models, along with a 1.4-litre Turbo MutltiAir model.
