Audi SA is taking its A8 range-topper up the limo league with two long-wheelbase versions – and introducing a stonking new 6.3-litre W12 engine.

The A8 range appears to be going through an exciting phase in its local life-cycle since launching with the single 4.2 FSI quattro tiptronic model in August, 2011. The locals added new engines in April, 2011, including the 4.2-litre twin-turbo V8 TDI which joins the 12-cylinder FSI petrol engine in the long-wheelbase versions.

The 4.2 TDI A8 L, according to Audi, is the only diesel long-wheelbase model available in South Africa.

At 5.3m long, the A8 L is about 130mm longer than the regular A8 and the car is 2mm taller at 1462mm. It's generous width remains at 1 949mm but perhaps more imposing is the introduction of the 12-cylinder 6.3-litre FSI engine that will be on display at October 2011’s Johannesburg International Motor Show.

POWER OF TWELVE

The W12 generates 368kW and 625Nm and will haul this big limo to 100km/h in 4.9 seconds. Top speed is a governed 250km/h.

The lwb A8 4.2 TDI q Tiptronic generates 258kW/800Nm and reaches 100km/h in a little more than six seconds. Its top speed is also limited to 250km/h.

Each has all-wheel drive and an eight-speed tiptronic gearbox, adjustable air suspension, a sports differential and 20” alloy rims.

Other highlights include rear-seat entertainment with two wide LCD screens, an MMI controller and Bluetooth headsets and power sunshades for the rear and rear side windows. LED headlights are standard on the W12.

The new Audi A8 Ls are available to order at all Audi Centres.
