BMW's compact X1 crossover has been around for three years so now comes a mid-life makeover, body styling upgrade and interior improvements with a new range of advanced diesel engines.
The diesel power is based on the 1995cc, all-aluminium, four-cylinder with common-rail direct fuel-injection and BMW’s TwinPower turbo technology. The European diesel range is designated as the sDrive18d, xDrive18d, sDrive20d and xDrive20d.
Models sporting the 18d badge are capable of 106kW and 320Nm from 1750-2750rpm.
DIESEL POWER
In sDrive guise this equates to a 0-100km/h sprint of 9.6sec and a top speed of 201km/h. The 18d units are capable of 4.1 litres/100km and a CO2 output of 128g/km.
The all-wheel drive xDrive model shares engine outputs with the rear-wheel drive variant, reaching 100km/h in 9.9sec and a top speed of 194km/h. It returns 4.5 litres/100km on the combined cycle with CO2 emissions down to 143g/km.
The 20d TwinPower diesel engine is also available in both sDrive and xDrive variants, and produces 137.2kW with 380Nm of torque available from 1750-2750rpm. The sDrive model is capable of 0-100km/h in 7.8sec and a top speed of 218km/h. The sDrive20d achieves four litres/100km and emits 143g/km of CO2.
The xDrive20d also has an engine output identical to the sDrive20d and completes the 0-100km/h in 8.1sec with a top speed of 214km/h and fuel consumption of 4.5-litres/100km with CO2 emissions of 143g/km.
The sDrive20d EfficientDynamics is only available in rear-wheel drive with a manual gearbox and has a tuned two-litre diesel engine capable of 121kW and 380Nm. The sDrive20d achieves a combined fuel consumption figure of 3.7 litres/100km and emits 119g/km of CO2.
The flagship xDrive25d is only available in all-wheel drive and 162kW at 4000rpm and 450Nm at 1500rpm and has a claimed fuel consumption of 4.5 litres/100km and CO2 emissions of 145g/km.
A six-speed manual is available as standard on all X1 models but a new eight-speed auto with steptronic is available on every variant apart from the sDrive EfficientDynamics.
STYLE UPGRADE
At the front the X1 receives extended painted surfaces, new LED headlights (with optional xenons) with white LED surrounds. The new X1 features reduced plastic bordering at the lower edge of the body, while the indicators are now in the wing mirrors. At the rear, the extended surfaces continue with a more pronounced underguard and the X1 is offered in new colours and alloy wheel designs.
Inside, the angled centre console is now shallower, and covered with a higher quality surface material, while the panel for the sound system and climate control is now finished in gloss black. The new BMW X1 features a storage compartment in the instrument panel as standard, but when the vehicle is specified with satellite navigation, this becomes the operational screen for the iDrive system.
Revised trim is introduced for the gear shifter, cup holder and headlight switch.
