• Datsun returns to SA car market
• Chasing first-time new-car buyers
• Entry price from R89 500
BOKSBURG, Gauteng - Datsun is at last back in South Africa, though not as you knew it. Its first offering bearing the redesigned and modernised badge, the Go, is the maker's entry into the hotly contested entry segment of the market.
Wheels24's SERGIO DAVIDS was driving the car out in Boksburg today (Tuesday, Oct 14) and will share his full report later this week.
Meanwhile, Datsun SA's general manager Des Fenner said: "The entry price of R89 500 for the Mid Model and R99 500 for the Lux Model means the Go will be a natural choice for younger, first-time buyers or people looking for a vehicle that could be used as a comfortable, stylish and fuel-efficient 'urban runabout'."
NO AIRBAGS OR ABS
Sales of the Datsun GO will begin when dealers open their doors on October 20 2014.
The cars will be imported as completely assembled units from India, where the Datsun Go became a feature in early 2014.
Fenner said: "The five-speed manual Datsun Go weighs 1152kg. It has a 1198cc, DOHC quad-valve, three-cylinder, fuel-injected petrol engine. Fuel consumption is listed as 5.2 litres/100km in a combined urban and rural cycle."
Engine output figures are listed as 50kW at 5000rpm and 104Nm at 4000rpm. Acceleration to 100km/h will take 13.3 seconds.
Safety features include effective ventilated front disc brakes for shorter stopping distances and best in class lighting performance, according to Datsun. However, Davids reports the cars do not feature any airbags or even ABS as an option.
A three-year 100 000km warranty with roadside assistance comes as standard, and owners can choose a range of service and maintenance plans.
